What is a fraction?
A fraction is the result of a division of two whole numbers or in other words a mathematical representation of a number that expresses a part of a whole. It consists of two numbers separated by a horizontal or diagonal line (fraction bar), with one number above the line and one below. The number above the fraction bar is called the numerator, and the number below the fraction bar is called the denominator.
The numerator represents the number of equal parts or portions you have, and the denominator represents the total number of equal parts into which the whole is divided. Fractions are used to describe quantities that are not whole numbers and can represent values that are smaller or larger than one. The denominator can not be zero. If the numerator is smaller than the denominator, the fraction is located between 0 and 1.
